Project description

Traditional Boyko area or “Boykivshchyna” spreads around the Carpathian Mountains including parts of Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia oblasts and Podkarpackie voivodeship. Having an interesting authentic culture and many well-preserved objects of tangible and intangible heritage, this ethnic group is, unfortunately, less studied and, therefore, less popular than, e.g. Hutsuls. Traditional Boyko areas are somewhat underestimated as tourist destinations, the number of international tourists is insignificant.

The aim of GORGANY_HERITAGE project is to promote Boyko’s heritage of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. The Rozhnyativ raion of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast has been selected as the target area is the main settlement area of this group in Ukraine, with many objects related to their history still present. The project has a strong research component including cultural and historical researches of the region and a complex sociological survey of the Boyko's heritage. The findings will be a valuable source for other project activities such as joint conferences, creation of the “Register of the historical, cultural and natural heritage objects and development of Boyko’s heritage tourist route”. The latter will include 17 places of interest along the 70 km of the way, with small infrastructure installed. St. Cecilia’s wooden church dating from the 18th c, one of the landmarks located within the route, will undergo official registration as a heritage object. To develop the capacities of local shareholders in cultural heritage management and promotion, training and an exchange visit will be organized. Also, ITC "Cultural Heritage Center of Broshniv-Osadska AH” will be opened.

The project will increase the tourist attractiveness of the area and activate cross-border dialogue. Local communities will benefit from the project in the long run as cultural and tourism-related activities will continue, contributing to local development.
