Project description

Historically, the largest communities settled near the water - along rivers, or near the coast of the ocean. A river is an inseparable part of the cityscape, history, culture, and present day life of many cities. The Styr river in Lutsk and the Wisłok river in Rzeszow are the arteries of these cities, their natural embellishment and favorite places for relaxation. Unfortunately, both rivers suffer from similar problems such as water pollution and the reduction of nearby green spaces. Moreover, they are not on the list of tourist attractions as no relevant infrastructure is available on their sites.

The partners of UrbanRivers project are convinced that the promotion and protection of urban rivers can increase the tourist attractiveness of Rzeszow and Lutsk. To that end, infrastructural improvements will take place in both cities: in Lutsk a pier on the Styr River will be modernized and in Rzeszow two flower meadows will appear near the Wisłok riverbank area. Also, the officials responsible for natural heritage protection, spatial planning, and tourism development will participate in experience exchange visits. For wide promotion of local natural heritage, a cross-border picnic will be organized in Lesya Ukrainka Central Park in Lutsk with different activities available to visitors such as environmental quest for schoolchildren, kayaking and sport fishing competitions, free boating tours. Also, the citizens will be able to participate in the open discussion on spatial planning and natural heritage issues with city officials. Joint promotional campaign will include QR-code informational marking of the natural heritage sites in Lutsk and Rzeszow, a promotional film, thematic classes in kindergartens, and natural heritage maps of Rzeszow and Lutsk in 2 languages.

The project will contribute to the improvement of the two cross-border cities and the well-being of their citizens at the same stimulating incoming tourism through eco-friendly approaches.
