14 / 03 / 2019
Category: Project News

Project "Protecting the Solina Lake and Skhidnytsya’s sources of healing waters - a common challenge and opportunity to maintain and exploit the potential of the natural heritage" is implemented under the Thematic Objective Heritage. The Lead Beneficiary of the PROTECTWATER project is the Solina Commune and the Project Beneficiary is the City Council Skhidnytsya in Ukraine.

Protection and preservation of the Solina Lake, local rivers (San and Skhidnichanka) and the Skhidnytsya healing waters from contamination with communal sewage, as well as an improvement and maintenance of a good quality of the surface and underground waters as the main natural resources used by tourists, will contribute to achievement of the main objective of the project – the fuller exploitation of the natural heritage of the border areas of the Bieszczady and Beskid Skolski Mountains in extending a tourist offer based on the principles of sustainable development.

As a part of the joint undertaking, two sewage treatment plants in Skhidnytsya and the sewage system in three locations in the Solina Commune will be built. Project partners will also conduct a series of trainings aimed at raising ecological awareness among inhabitants and tourists. Activities carried out under the project will have the positive impact on the ecosystem and tourism development in the region.

The project started on 1st November 2018. The Solina Commune has already signed the contract with the company responsible for the construction of the sewage system in Bukowiec and with the building inspector. The Solina Commune is currently carrying out construction works regarding the laying of sewage pipes. The drilling under the bed of the Solinka River is also made. The works are carried out as planned. The completion of works on the Polish side is scheduled for 30th May 2020. On 27th August 2018, project was registered by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine. The technical documentation of the works on the Ukrainian side was positively assessed. Currently, the tender for construction works is in progress.

According to the Grant Contract, the PROTECTWATER project should be completed by 31st October 2020.
